Maine town becomes first to declare food sovereignty

Natural News

The town of Sedgwick, Maine, currently leads the pack as far as food sovereignty is concerned. Local residents recently voted unanimously at a town hall meeting to pass an ordinance that reinforces its citizens' God-given rights to "produce, process, sell, purchase, and consume local foods of their choosing," which includes even state- and federally-restricted foods like raw milk.

This is good news! It's about time communities started expressing their beliefs. Isn't it all about communities? Neighbors, helping neighbors. They don't need the intrusion of the Feds, or the State, for that matter. A basic right, indeed, a natural right, is the ability to grow and sell food, which is a basic for human existence. It is the truly free market experience.

Thanks for posting this thread!  Food is good, I eat it everyday!  ;)

If anyone is interested in this kind of food security stuff, there is a website that began as a protest against the FEDS when they were trying to get people to register every barn yard critter etc.  http://nonais.org/   I've found it useful over the last few years and used to spend some time
being a thorn in the side of the Feds regarding animal registrations and associated legislation etc.

The guy that owns the site raises Pigs in Vermont and seems very happy with his family and farm and has done alot of interesting small farm stuff.  I believe MT Porcupine interviewed him awhile back too.  His small farm blog details what a good job a couple can do raising kids thru home schooling too.

I heard one of the reasons for this that people are tired of government busy bodies trying to bust Amish farmers and others for selling raw milk.

I read the ordinance and there are a couple other Maine towns that have similar proposals.  There is an article at the website www.tenthamendmentcenter.com
