You might find cheaper rates using an online company, like esurance, Progressive, or Geico.

Altho Insurance isnt required, you should know there is a financial responsability law. If you get into an accident, and it was your fqault, they will make you pay for the other persons bills. that can include not only the car damage, but also any medical and loss of work. Some people say, well ok I have no assets, but they also take your licence and right to operate until you forfill the leins. And this could be thousands of dollars. You should check with the state website and see. The insurance rates are less here than other states. It seems if you are under 25 then they are a bit high, but still less than other states.
Oh, and when you finally did get the debt paid off. they require you to have insurance for a period of time once you get your licence back.
Good luck with it.Dont let it discourage you but stay protected.

I would avoid those companies.  Esurance has a bad reputation for jacking up prices after you sign up, geico won't cover you if you get in a wreck in MA, and Progressive isn't named that for nothing.  If you are a veteran USAA has good rates.  In NH, I was paying about $30/month for twice the recommended level of liability insurance on 2 vehicles.  Since my wife backed into some vehicles and we both got speeding tickets, and we bought a new-to-us car, my rates went up to close to $45 for the same liability insurance plus comprehensive insurance on the newer vehicle and roadside assistance.  I don't have insurance on my motorcycle, but then again I haven't ridden it in over a year.  (It needs some work and is in storage in Manchester.)

I would also recommend going with a local company.

"Save 15% or more with Geico"... or maybe pay 50% more, which is what they quoted me!
