Can I fight poison ivy?

A cousin of mine (first cousin to my father, actually) almost died after wandering downwind of a burning pile of brush that contained poison ivy. Pustules in your nose, mouth, throat and lungs can't be pleasant.

He did survive, though, and has outlived my father.
