Why not Gizmo? You can text chat as well as voice chat (I understand Google can as well, but its worth checking out)

Sitting at a location that includes "free" wifi -- and hence has a virtually unuseable network -- I would normally hang out in secondlife, but in a post-holocaust techno-throwback to the 90's, I'd be happy with the Yahoo that nobody is on :-|
