Brainwashing

Thomas Sewell in Inside American Ediucation (1993) talks about brainwashing in the classroom.  One essential element is "Isolation and Cross Examination".  But since it's expensive to lock people up in isolation:

"An ingenious solution was found under Mao in China:  The victim would be given a preliminary interrogation and them released with a "warning that is is a criminal offense to tell anybody--his friends, his relatives, or even his wife--that he is under examination by the police.  Any individual who violated this warning was subject to a long prison sentence"

Sound familiar?  If you'd ever been interrogated by Homeland Security, it would sound very familiar.  The patriot act/homeland security uses the exact same technique.  I talked to a man once who'd been interrogated by them, and he revealed that it was against the law for him to tell anyone about it.  Now I know why...it's a brainwashing technique developed by Mao
