I bought a case of beer today, and the clerk hadn't even glanced in my general direction before she asked my date of birth (they key it into the register).

"12-20-1985"

"Okay, that'll be $17.50, and happy belated buh... (she finally looked up at me) ...rthday?"

"What's the matter, don't I look 21?"  ;D

Interesting, they wouldn't have checked your ID if you said you were 21?  At the convenience store at which I work, we have to check ID for tobacco for anyone looking under 35.  Otherwise, we just have to ask for DOB and put it in the computer-register.  I've had people who look over 50 tell me they were 19.  Depending on my mood, I either say "Sorry, sir, I have to check the ID of everyone under 35," or I say "You really didn't age well at all."   8)

Dada didded another silent demo, at the NH state liquor commission....after hearing on this forum, and in the Union Leader, that they were pushing for a ban on 18-20 year-olds in bars.

My sign said

The State Shouldn't
Ban Youn Adults
From Bars
NHfree.com

and the flyer said...

Dear NHSLC:  Please don't push for a ban on young adults in bars

I have the right to remain silent.  But thanks for your desire to know more about this demonstration.

I read the Union Leader article regarding possible efforts by the Liquor Commission to ban 18-20 year olds from nightclubs.

As best I could tell, your representatives did not come right out and advocate a specific type of legislation...and I appreciate that.   When any unelected government minister uses their taxpayer-funded position to argue in favor of additional government control...that constitutes compelled speech.

I resent it when representatives of a bureaucracy advocate, at my expense, new restrictions on businesses and individual freedom.   If I want more restrictions, I'll move to Mass. or New York.

I don't want you to aid and abet new discrimination against young adults.  I'm more afraid of institutions like yours than I am of 19 year olds entering bars.   Some of them abuse their rights, but that is a price we pay for freedom.  It's not right to punish an entire class of citizens because some of them misbehave or cause a problem.

Please know that at least one citizen would appreciate it if you would just do nothing all day rather than wasting my tax money on social engineering schemes that undermine everything New Hampshire is supposed to stand for.

Yours,

Dave Ridley

Alan, a store clerk himself, just went through a police sting.  Had he have failed, he would have been fired.  Read his rant, in i think general discussion.

Where I work they're very strict when it comes to this sort of thing because they have had a reputation in the past for having cashiers that have sold cigarettes to people who are underage. Add to that the fact that no one can buy Corcidon (?, it's a cough medicine) if they're under 18 or anything with pseudoephedrine in it outside of the pharmacy and it makes things rather fun. One guy came in trying to buy Cortislim or something like that and we all learned that we're not allowed to sell it to anyone who's under age 27! The poor guy was 26.
While I don't card everyone I sell to (if they look older and wrinkly I tend to let them pass), if they can't buy something, I just tell them to write to their legislators. Might as well sow the seeds of the revolution. Too bad we don't sell liquor. I'd love to start that one, too.

You know as well as I do, though, a single mail out of the blue does... almost nothing.
Acting together, though, we can seriously influence the legislature, both in terms of its composition, and how they vote on critical bills. Don't just "tell them to write their legislator"; have a few NHLA tri-folds handy, and give them out to people who are getting screwed by the Law!

Yea, that'd be great. Then I'd just get fired for handing out leaflets :P I'm pretty sure my company would consider unkosher to hand out things like that, when not selling cough syrup to minors is THEIR personal policy, and nothing ushered in by the Feds.

I feel like I'm working for Satan, really.
