If anyone is around at lunchtime on Thursday, stop by City Hall at 12:00 noon.

On Flag Day, June 14th, Mayor Guinta will be joining Phil Greazzo as the Fix Our Flag campaign will be launching nationally with a Flag dedication ceremony at City Hall Plaza.

More info on F.O.F. can be found at www.fixourflag.com.

Glad to know I'm not the only one irked by this. My email to Phil:

I, too, have long been bothered by the abomination of the "backwards" flag. But the right sleeve isn't the only place it's seen.

The trouble started in Congress, when the flag behind the Speaker's podium was flipped. The flag code now calls for the union to always be in the upper left corner when the flag is displayed against the wall, no matter if it's horizontal or vertical. But displaying a vertical flag this way means the reverse side is showing. When I learned flag etiquette, we were taught that if the flag were displayed vertically, it was merely rotated 90 degrees clockwise. That should still be the case.

In the late 1970s or early 80s, the Air Force requested to have flags painted on the right side of their planes so as to appear to "stream" in the wind. The "reverse" flag on the uniform is for the same (wrong) reason.

As for right shoulder vs. left, the right shoulder is correct. The place of honor is always to the right. A flag flown from a vehicle should be flown from the right front fender. A flag worn on a uniform should be worn on the right. But it should be a proper flag, not the flag's backside.

Thanks for your efforts. Good luck with it.
