The post office nowadays is a private company. A private company with a government-granted monopoly and stacks of special laws protecting it, but a private company nonetheless.

I just thought about it and I have no "federal purposes," so I guess I'll be cool without a REAL ID.

KBCraig, that's the first thing that I thought of when I read this article.  I really hope they do this because I want to see Russell and Dave standing outside the federal court buildings, telling the entrance guards, "Yes, that judge inside there wants to see me.  No, I don't have official federal papers.  Are you going to let me in to see the judge?"

I sent in a renewal a couple of years ago and they sent mine back with a hole stamped through it. .... They want their money. I guess this is like nazi and commie places .... I can't leave.
