DON'T put ice melt products on your roof.

Wouldn't have thought of doing it, but why shouldn't you do this?

One good reason is that you'll kill any plant life in the drip line, for several generations. If you hate shrubs flowers and grass anyway, go for it!

bubbalugnutz may have had a different reason in mind, though. Maybe he'll expound.

I think there's been more snow this MONTH than there was all last winter.

I think there's been more snow this MONTH than I've seen my previous 24 YEARS.

Not all ice melts will damage plants. You need to read the labels.

If you are getting ice dams, your roof needs to be properly insulated and vented.
Poor insulation, unvented insulation, or an unvented attic space will cause snow to melt against the roof. The water then runs down the roof and freezes where the roof changes from warm to cold over the outside wall. Make the whole roof cold and the problem is gone.

just got my first snowblower and I'm loving it.  makes life a lot easier . . . now I just have to worry about those ice jams or whatever they're called that are forming on my roof . . . any suggestions on how to take care of those once they form?

DON'T put ice melt products on your roof. Buy an ice rake (long handled rake-ish device w/ a solid blade on the end)
Pull down the first few feet of snow from the roof edge w/ it
NEXT summer/fall, install roof snow melt cable.
Both of the above avail. at hardware stores
They already have the ice dams. And where did you get it was a federal offense?

Wow....dude, I got a bridge I'd like to sell you....
