Last thing, it's stupid to film such a thing and not except people to get mad at it.
I made sure that my face was hidden when throwing puppies out of the helicopter.

;D

Thanks for defending military. The first place I heard the term libertarian was in the military. The guys I was with were, for the most part, decent, moral, perhaps naive people.

We didn't drag anyone behind a pickup truck, like those evil Texans... oh wait I shouldn't blame Texans for what a couple monsters did.

Let's not have any anti-monster bigotry for what millions of Texans did, either.

On another subject, isn't it interesting how concerned we are about the puppy and how unconcerned about civilians in countries where the government is supported by our Aid To Dependent Dictators programs?

QuoteWhether it was dead or not really isn't the issue. The main problem is the lack of human dignity he showed. It was poor taste and a good example of the blatant disregard american troops show to the lives, property, customs, etc of the "conquered".

NO.  Whether it is dead or not IS the issue here.  If the dog is alive then this guy is all the bad things everyone says he is.  If the dog is dead then the situation is entirely.  If the dog was dead then he should have thrown the dog off the cliff.  Could have been used to hide an IED.  Did you know that insurgents sometimes use dead animals to hide IEDs?

How in the hell does this show blatant disregard to the lives, property or customs of Iraqis?  Do you know how they view dogs over there?  What do you think they should have done?  gone door to door and find out if someone was missing a dead dog?

Does all the logic hurt your brain?

My point is that it isn't the training, but the situation that causes soldiers to do stupid shit. If you put a person in the same situation as those soldiers without any military training it is inevitable that a few would act the same way.

It's interesting (I also have this problem with the police.) that we all have these prejudices about the military, cops, gov't, etc. How would it be different if we watched that video and proclaimed "All goddamn crackers are insane! Fuck the white man!"

Just b/c the men are soldiers does not mean that all soldiers are bad. It's the institution and the situation of war that corrupts men.

Quote- Pakistan - Jan 2002 to Mar 2002
- Afghanistan - Mar 2002 to Aug 2002
- Afghanistan - Jan 2003 to Aug 2003
- Iraq - Nov 2005 to Nov 2006

I certainly am not saying that all soldiers are bad.
And maybe training is the wrong word, I wasn't talking about the literal training these men receive... when I said "call it good military training", I was implying exactly your quote above: "It's the institution and the situation of war that corrupts men." I was talking about their social conditioning within the military. The soldiers in the videos seem to get the feeling of being permitted to hold a being in contempt and maltreat it as something beneath them - and seem to get satisfaction from being permitted to vent their power on those who are powerless.  I believe the military fosters this pleasure-in-cruelty mentality.

You might not believe that from your personal dealings or the dealings you yourself witnessed - but overall I think this is whats happening. The "new boys" are certainly not as moral, or the military's conscience as the "boys" were in wars past.

I'm sure that stuff like this happened in past wars. It's the ease of evidence thanks to the internet that is new.

Nah, the supply lines were terrible in past wars. They would have eaten the puppy.

That's for sure. Let's hope it increases resistance to random military adventures.
