With one of these fearsome creatures staring out of your rear window, you're never going to need a car alarm.

Startled police officers on a night patrol encountered this 6ft alligator after stopping a motorist for erratic driving.

Video from the police car shows the officers pointing their torches into the back of the sedan, illuminating the highly unusual passenger.

The reptile, which had been travelling in the back seat, had then moved up to the area behind the headrests by the rear window.

The look in its eyes suggested it would be less than co-operative when it came to helping the officers with their inquiries.

They questioned the driver, William Johnson, who turned out to be wanted over a burglary.

He said he had found the alligator by the side of the road in Brazoria, near Houston, Texas.

Reptile experts were brought in and the creature was lured out of the car then later released into a national wildlife refuge.

Unaware of the vehicle's passenger, officers approach the car on a routine traffic stop - but the reptile gives them a nasty shock when it moves up to the back window

Johnson was charged with illegal possession of an alligator.

But it was allegations that he had been taking items from a mobile home in a nearby neighbourhood earlier that day that sent him to jail on a burglary charge.

A witness said Johnson had knocked on his door to ask him for help moving a television into the vehicle - except the man knew it didn't belong to Johnson.

The neighbour refused and then noticed the alligator in the back seat of Johnson's car before he drove hurriedly away.

Investigators found a hair trimmer and video game controller in his pockets following the traffic stop.

Yeah, he was on the wrong side of the line. If he'd been east of the Sabine River, he could have put a leash on him and named him Phydeaux.  ;)

I knew a guy when I was in high school (he was several years older) who had a pet cougar named Brutus. He drove a T-top Trans-Am, and Brutus rode around almost everywhere with him. He could have t-tops off, windows down, and engine running, and never had to worry about anyone stealing his car or anything in it, so long as Brutus was stretched out in the back seat.

Wow, I love cougars.  I think black panthers are awesome too.  I've always wanted a wolf as a pet but I'm against taking animals and reptiles, etc. out of their natural environment just because I want one. :-\

I would love a chance to be near a relatively docile Cougar, beautifull cats.  I wouldn't want one for a pet though.  They are not tame.  Same with a wolf.  Can be unpredictable.
