Andy Griffith Style Law Enforcement

I was watching the Andy Griffith show today and it occurred to me that if we have to have law enforcement it is a shame that the sheriffs and police officers aren't more like he was. In this particular episode Andy leaves Barney in charge for a day and he ends up arresting the entire town for trivial things that are technically against the law. When Andy returns he dismisses all the charges and tells Barney that while he was correct that they had all broken the law, "If you went strictly by the book, why I don't reckon we'd have anything in this country but a hundred eighty million jailbirds."

It seems to me that if there were more law enforcement officers who had his mindset, life would be a whole lot more bearable, at least until we can get the onerous laws rescinded.

Sadly and honestly, the police FORCE has become a terminal cancer growth. It is impossible to seperate "good cop" from "bad cop" because the whole damn system is diseased. Its no wonder the cops keep getting better weapons and armor. Ever wonder why all these federal buildings have upped security? NO, it's not because of "terrorists", its because the common people are pretty pissed off.
We need to elect sheriffs who will stand up for the constitution and say NO to outside intrusion (feds) and bullshit "laws". It has to happen at the county levels.

This is the differentiation between police officer and peace officer I've heard some people make. I don't think we should even have peace officers—people should be responsible for their own defense, lest they become dependent on, and eventually enslaved to, those who defend them—but benign peace officers are definitely a step in the right direction.
