It's been around for decades. All they do is type in your info in a booklet that says "licensed driver" in a bunch of different languages.

Yeah, actually, it'd be cool to get as an alternative to REAL ID. You just get your non-REAL ID license, go to one the various agencies that sell these, they witness your license and notarize the international one. But, I think it is only valid outside the U.S.

doobie

I actually think that's kind of neat, in a twisted kind of way. It's a free market, voluntary service that makes it easier to communicate to people that you've demonstrated some level of competency.

Of course, the idea of mandatory licensing to use roads is a problem in my eyes, but this exact same service could be used if roads were privately owned. It's not a license "permitting" driving, it's a tool to make translation and understanding of what your foreign certification means. Such a product would have value if you were showing a French road owner what your certification from Shire Safe Drivers Company means.

Sort of like Real ID in itself...
Its not a passport... just a program were your State-issued DL can be used as one.

With the exception that REAL ID is mandatory to "exercise" your "rights", sends data to an agency interested in squashing your liberty and creates arbitraty excuses for rationalizing the detainment and searching of people who choose not to have one.

The only complaints I have with government ID is the fact that it's government issued. This is not. It is as voluntary as the Shire driver's license, not having one doesn't oppress you and having one serves a purpose.

I'll put this International Driver's License within my crosshairs when a government begins mandating it. :P

My passport was only used when entering another country, or returning to the US. I pretty much had to use it every time except Canada.
The only 'rights' I have outside of government are natural. This is freedom of will... which allows for travel, but not unfettered travel. The unfettered travel is an agreement with other parties.
