Annual Wood Days carves out new niche within Canterbury

Thursday, Jun. 26, 2008

Wood Days has carved out a new location in Canterbury after a one-year hiatus.

Woodworker Dave Emerson, who along with the Guild of New Hampshire Woodworkers started Wood Days at Canterbury Shaker Village 17 years ago, says the popular event this year will be held at Old Ways Traditions, his woodworking business just north of the village.

The event will take place Saturday and Sunday, June 28-29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature woodworking demonstrations, antique machinery displays and musical performances.

Demonstrations will include blacksmithing, furniture-making, coopering, timberframing, woodturning, dovetailing, and guitarmaking. Antique tools will be for sale and there will be antique cars, trucks, tractors and engines on view.

"This has been both a joy and a challenge,'' said Emerson, who said that the support and encouragement he has received from fellow woodworkers has motivated him to host the event.

Emerson's woodworking and retail business, formerly known as Shaker Pine Furniture, burned to the ground on August 10, 2001, during the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen Fair, at which he had manned a booth.

With help from members of the woodworkers guild, friends and fellow townspeople, the Sant Bani School and members of the crafts league, Emerson was able to rebuild, and that expanded facility has become Old Ways Traditions.

Emerson said that the first person he called about taking part in the revival of Wood Days was noted furniture maker Garrett Hack, whose enthusiastic response "got me on a roll. Almost every person I've called has been able to say they'll be here for the event,'' said Emerson.

The event will be held the same weekend as the NASCAR Sprint Cup race weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, so Emerson advises those who aren't familiar with race-weekend traffic patterns to call him for directions on how best to get to and from his place.

Bands booked include Grass Dawgs and Jack Pine Holdouts, which will provide old-time rural music, Uncle Steve Band, a bluesy R&B group, and Bow Junction, a bluegrass band.

An art show will open Saturday afternoon's events and will feature Pat Desmarais's adapted photographs and contemporary floor cloths and Ed Sharron's landscape and animal photographs.

A $5 minimum admission donation is suggested. Contact Dave Emerson at 783-4403 or efurnitr@comcast.net for more details.

Thans, Kevin! I went to the Shaker Village version two years ago. This should be better.

Pat McCotter

Well, this was a disappointment. There was more to see - because of more area - when it was at Shaker Village.
