IIRC the original number (from the oldest scrolls) was 616 anyway, because it referred to a different Emperor.

IMHO people who think certain books are sacred should actually read the books, but that would certainly be breaking tradition

I'm under the understanding the original number was 1666. MDCLXVI, instead of DCLXVI.
Which was to represent the Roman Empire... not a single Caesar, but all of them.
