CHARLESTOWN – An unidentified male state trooper was shot and injured last night while entering the home of Anthony Jarvis, 53, who died in the confrontation with state police and a regional special operations team.

The trooper is being treated at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. His condition has not been not disclosed.

In a brief press release this morning, law enforcement authorities said state and local police and the Western New Hampshire Special Operations Unit went to Charlestown "to effectuate a search warrant and arrest warrants. While at the scene, the police encountered (Jarvis) in his residence. The police determined that Jarvis was a felon and learned information that he had a weapon. When Jarvis would not comply with police orders to exit his residence, the police entered. Upon entering, shots were fired injuring a state trooper. Jarvis was subsequently found deceased."

Associate Attorney General Ann Rice last night told the New Hampshire Sunday News that the injured trooper is male, but would not disclose his identity.

"I can't confirm anything else at this point," she said. "We're responding and gathering facts."

Neighbor Albert Harris II said last night that he had seen four police cruisers and a SWAT team pass his house and stop further down Summer Street, which runs east from Main Street (Route 12).

Police took two women out of the house, and a third person, believed to be a teenager, was removed in handcuffs, Harris said.

Police then chased a man who went into an RV or trailer and wouldn't come out, he said.

"We heard a couple of shots fired," Harris said. "They were shooting at each other, and I guess the other guy was killed."

Harris said a neighbor told him the man was dead. Harris and a second neighbor said they heard the trooper had been shot in the leg.

At least one person was led away in handcuffs, according to Harris.

A local resident, who refused to provide a name, reported hearing a "loud boom" followed by "a lot of gunshots."

Another neighbor said he counted at least 15 shots.

In a brief interview last night, a teenager who said he lived at the home targeted by police referred to his uncle in the past tense, but refused to elaborate. He refused to give his name and said he was fishing when police surrounded the house.

"I'm not going to say anything. I'm too shook up to talk," the teen said.

Sunday News staff reporter Nancy West contributed to this report.
