I'll be closing my bank account soon and once I make the move I won't really have need for an account except to cash checks.  Where I live if you don't have an account with the bank you must give a thumbprint to cash the check.  Is it like this in NH too?  Is there any other way to cash a check with a modicum of privacy?

You can go to those check cashing places.... but they might charge you a fee.

I have never tried to cash a check at a bank (w/o an account) so no idea on that.

As far as paychecks go, you can cash those without an account according to RSA 275:43:

(d) With checks on banks convenient to the place of employment where suitable arrangements are made for the cashing of such checks by employees for the full amount of the wages due

One way might be to sign over your checks to a trusted friend, have them cash it at their bank, and then give you the money.  Not sure how feasible that'd be, but it might be worth checking out (haha, no pun intended).

I've done that before when I didn't have an ID on me and needed to cash a check. Of course that was when a couple of the tellers didn't know me or I was at a bank that wasn't mine. I didn't deposit them in a friend's account, I just had them cash it and to the scratch. Not a bad system.

I doubt it, but maybe that's a taxable loss.

I know that you can go to the bank that issued the check and cash it there for no charge, no finger printing, however you are still using a bank and any large amounts may have a wait time.

Any banks up there that serve customers without SSNs?

Supposedly Bank of America will, but I haven't heard from anyone around here who's tried it.
