Your not describing individaul freedom in your posts.
Your advocating for a different system.

I'm advocating for NO system.

Yes sir. I'm not too keen on Perpendicular Bisector Theorem but I know what feels good and what makes sense.

Freedom = Good

Oppression = Bad

Equal Freedom = Best

Uhh......ok? Is that really up to me. I'm just here to shoot a deer remember? ONE deer. I'm not on a copycat Bill loose in the mall AK-47 deer killing spree.

So which part of the NO SYSTEM requires someone to 'answer to the community' for taking more than they require for sustenance?

John......There is no REQUIREMENT for anybody to do anything. I can't predict how people in the community will react after Bill takes all of the food. Can you?

Go kill a deer and eat for God's sake. JUST go kill a deer and eat. Stop wringing your hands over pretending somebody killed all of the deer in the world. Stop looking for a demon where one doesn't exist. Have a great New Year my friend. I'm out of this thread.

Um, the Easter Island incident linked to earlier seems to have taken place because the people there held bizarre, irrational beliefs. Such as believing in government.

Jared Diamond chronicles what happen to the Easter Islanders in his book "Collapse".

People will defend their cultural institutions/practices all the way to their own death in the face of other rational choices.

CS seems to be showing us how this works.

In most cases today there are ample warnings of taking too many deer, etc. Occasionally that isn't the case - hunters etc. go out on a hunt and suddenly find themselves coming back with nothing, but that is by far the exception. It would be nice if there was some sort of natural mechanism for someone saying, ok we found less this year than last year, maybe we are taking too many and need to cut back, so that the stocks can revive, but there clearly is none. Instead, the natural tendency is to stay out longer to compensate, so that the same number can be obtained, which further decimates the population. As mentioned, there is a sustainable limit, and when it is exceeded the population rapidly declines. However, it is absurd to think that taking one deer out of season is going to have any affect. Instead of a fine, a public conversation would be more appropriate. Bring the deer head into town hall and discuss the effect on the deer population. If anyone thinks a fine is appropriate let them explain why.

Wild life in general do not interact well with human populations - in Africa elephant habitats have been disappearing, there are fewer than a few hundred of any number of species left, and in general we are in the middle of the sixth major mass extinction that the world has seen; and we are losing species at a faster rate than ever before. Most people know only of the mass extinction of the dinosaurs, but there are five others. Not counting the present one, the one 65 million years ago that took the dinosaurs was the second largest mass extinction.

We are lucky that in this country about 5% of the land area is set aside as a wilderness area (2.5% of the lower 48 - although in NH it is 12%). Right now I am trying to get the arctic zones also declared wilderness areas, everything above the arctic circle and everything below the antarctic circle. Nobody cares about the antarctic, but getting drilling for oil and commercial fishing in the arctic banned is going to be a tough sell.

Generally I am pretty happy with the job the fish and game department is doing, as they have generally been able to revive the wild turkey populations in the state and maintain the deer population. Keeping mercury out of the fish, I give them a failing grade on, however. In all fairness, my only contact with them, ever, was watching them make a fool of themselves looking for a missing learjet, that was found 3 years later by a surveyor - exactly where it was expected.
