Sounds like attempted robbery to me.
Sounds like he put the clerks in danger to me.
Sounds like a guy I'd like to see caught.

I'd assume someone pointing a gun at me has some sort of intent to kill.

If it was  loaded, then he was willing to risk killing someone. I keep thinking about that stupid Football player who is going to get at least 2 & 1/2 years in prison for shooting himself. He endangered some folks.  He didn't point a gun at them and demand their dough!

Tom Sawyer

The penalty for threatening deadly force should be deadly force. Someone stupid or crazy enough to do it can't be counted on not to apply a couple pounds of force that will fire the weapon.

My sister's family had some punk ass kid with a rifle try to kidnap them and drive them out into the desert. My brother in law blew him out the front door.Good riddance to rabid animals that threaten people.

so ... would you have killed him?

Ayup. Assuming this is actually what happened:—

QuotePolice said the man entered the store carrying a rifle, immediately demanded money from the clerk and tried unsuccessfully to pull the cash register off the counter.

I tend to be very forgiving of people doing stupid or irresponsible stuff, even committing acts of aggression that don't involve putting someone's life or property at immediate, violent risk. This situation was clearly the latter.

They told me at the store that he actually pointed the rifle at the clerks.

All righty then. Deadly force was clearly warranted against this thug.

I'd have shot him in the crotch until he apologized.  Any dying I would leave to his discretion.
Fortunately for me, the Pacifists who object to this will also object to punishing me non-Defensively (after the fact), so it all works out.
