The way I look at is if that this person most likely had a freezer and fridge mostly full of food, due to the hard economic times his business slowed way down. He figures (and rightfully so) that it would be better to get some money (and hopefully a decent amount due to most people wishing to be fair) for this food that will otherwise rot and be no good and then thrown away then no money.

Seems like a good business strategy when you think about it like that.
