i phone with custom firmware and my custom iphone os.

Hardly your average cell phone.

I bought a Motorola Razr because Motorola had said that it intended to use Linux on all future models, and the previous model ran Linux. (There is, of course, absolutely no information available from Motorola on the subject.) When I received the phone, I discovered that it does not run Linux. This thing is locked down so tight that I can't even look at the root filesystem, much less modify anything. I'm calling the OS, etc, firmware because it is for all intents and purposes in ROM, not NVRAM.

This phone has a GPS in it. There is a menu item to turn the "location" function on or off, which displays (or not) an icon to indicate the status. Since the icon is under software control, it is entirely possible that it could be rigged to not display when the GPS is actually on. Since I can not even look at the filesystem, it is entirely possible that it could be changed without my knowledge or consent. If it were changed, I would not be able to detect the changes unless they were obvious through use. Since I have absolutely no control over the firmware or access to it, it is entirely possible that it could be changed remotely. In fact, that's the only way it could be changed. The bottom line is that it is entirely possible that the GPS, the mic., or even the camera could be used remotely without my knowledge or consent.

I looked through all the paperwork for the contract, and there is absolutely nothing in there that says that I cede control of the software to the phone company, or agree to use only their software on the phone. The phone is indisputably my property-- I payed for it, and I have to pay for the insurance on it. The phone company is (illegally, IMO) denying me the full use of my property by retaining exclusive control of the software.

So, to your previous post...
1) The data access on this phone works even on low signal when it can't make or receive voice calls.
2) I have no control over what connections the phone will allow.
3) It has a GPS.

definitely not an average phone but you can do the same with most phones.  especially "smart" phones

Android, iphone os, palm, symbian etc you can hack and slash all you want.

i would say that there must be a way to hack up that RAZR but i havent bothered trying on a razr to be honest.  that phone sounds like a nightmare though and the tinfoil hat should be worn if you are using it from the sounds of what you are saying lol!
