Someone had a hand held device kind of like a iPhone but that just uses wifi for VOIP. Apparently it's a mini computer like an iPhone as well. I think he said he paid like $200 for it. I got the impression he doesn't pay any monthly service fees to use VOIP with it. Anybody know about those?

Alternatively, I think a pre-paid cell phone is a nice backup for those who have VOIP at home. I'm using a pre-paid cell for all my calls right now but I tend to limit my talking quite a bit because of it. That's why I'm looking into VOIP.

I've had Vonage for my home phone since 2002 and never had any problems other than the number was "slammed" (some company took it over somehow) one time for a week, but Vonage got it back. Quality is really good.

I have used Skype for my business line for about a year and it just keeps getting better and better. Rarely a call with have a bad connection for some reason, but most are really good. The delay is slightly (maybe a half second) more than on a normal landline. Extremely cheap at about $5 for outgoing and incoming calls and they give you 10,000 minutes per month that can even be be used for business purposes. Can't beat that.

I don't have a smart phone yet, but Skype can run on most platforms now. They even came out with an iPhone app in the past couple weeks. On most carriers, from what I understand, Skpe with even work over the 3g network so you're not limited to wifi only. This can save you big time on minutes with your cell phone.

I'm on Skype now- unlimited calls in the U.S. and Canada for about $6 a month. PM me if you want my new phone # and ID on Skype. I don't want to post them publicly for obvious reasons, but if I know you, I'll prolly send it.

I'm going to be forwarding my calls to my cell phone when I'm out so the new # can essentially replace the previous one. You shouldn't need to call the cell phone unless it's an emergency. It's very possible that I will eventually just phase the cell phone out completely.
