Feds cracking down on garage sales

If you're planning a garage sale or organizing a church bazaar, you'd best beware: You could be breaking a new federal law. As part of a campaign called Resale Roundup, the federal government is cracking down on the secondhand sales of dangerous and defective products.

The initiative, which targets toys and other products for children, enforces a new provision that makes it a crime to resell anything that's been recalled by its manufacturer.

"Those who resell recalled children's products are not only breaking the law, they are putting children's lives at risk," said Inez Tenenbaum, the recently confirmed chairwoman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The crackdown affects sellers ranging from major thrift-store operators such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army to everyday Americans cleaning out their attics for yard sales, church bazaars or — increasingly — digital hawking on eBay, Craigslist and other Web sites.

Cash for clunkers. Don't let people sell things at flea markets or thrift stores. All new items are required and they will have tracking chips in them must have no lead in them..

But don't worry. The CPSC has heard your cries and you have until February 10, 2010, to comply with their rules...BUT...if anything you sell is found to be non-complyiing we will get you!

Isn't it nuts?   I mean what part of people's lives don't they want to invade and control?  >:(  I still don't understand the whole "cash for clunkers" thing either.  Is it so that everyone buys a brand new car with the tracking devices?

We're looking at trading in the minivan, not the cash for clunkers thing, for a 2007 Toyota Camry but how can I find out if it has a tracking device in it?   I wonder if my 2003 Ford Windstar has a tracking device in it and all of this time I haven't known.  :-\
