BOSTON — A lawyer for the family of a Massachusetts man who died after his arrest at a police sobriety road block says he died of blunt trauma to the head, torso and chest.

Attorney Frances King said Friday a state medical examiner has ruled that 45-year-old Kenneth Howe's death was a homicide.

King said the findings support the family's claim that the Worcester man was beaten by police at the North Andover checkpoint in November. Her comments were first reported by The Eagle-Tribune.

Authorities say Howe was taken into custody after striking a trooper and trying to flee.

A spokesman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said an investigation of Howe's death is continuing.

The medical examiner's report also says Howe had heart disease.
