Detained on bike by NYPD for not providing ID

I was riding down the center of 6th Ave an hour or so ago next to a NYPD van. At a stop light the cop started giving crap about not riding on the bike lane and asked me to pull over. It is not illegal to ride in the middle of the street, and I was riding behind the pack of cars with no one around me other than the NYPD van.

They detained me for over 20 minutes for refusing to provide ID, I recorded the last 8 minutes. It was really shocking how his aggressiveness changed when I started recording.

Anyways, while not a terribly exciting encounter (this is a good thing) it felt good to stand up for my rights. I encourage everyone to read up on them and start practicing them. Let's not turn out to be like England.

I think I handled it pretty well all things considered. I did have $500 in my pocket that I did not want "go missing" if he did arrest me for contempt of cop.

That 500 dollars wouldn't go missing.  It would be handy to have so you can have a drink and a smoke while you're waiting for a ride when you get out of jail.  He got tickets?  Giving his name stopped him from being arrested far as I can tell.
