Today, just about everywhere in the US a permit is required to do any work, no matter how minor to our property. We are denied the right to use our property as we see fit. Historically this has not always been the case. At some point there must have been a president case that opened the flood gates for this kind of crap. I have tried to research this issue but came up with nothing. Does anyone know the history and evolution of this evisceration of private property rights and the relevant legal presidents.

Please educate me.

I believe precedence is the word you want to use.

I just know from growing up that when I was in rural locations build permits were often not required. Especially when building out buildings. The excuse for permits for houses was safety for living in a dwelling.

Anymore most people don't remember or perhaps never lived where the build permit wasn't required.

I don't "pull" a building permit. I figure it is just inviting them into my life. I also figure, worst case I will offer to pay for the permit after the fact, if they get too uppity about it. During a 10 year property appraisal for property taxes, the old guy took note of two buildings that I had built without a permit. I asked him if he thought it was right to turn our rural location into the suburbs with all the restrictions they put up with. He didn't give me any trouble and I think he felt bad about being part of the system that is changing things here.

Benjamin Franklin pushed for fire codes.  This is not a new thing.
