Here's a civil disobedience hero for ya ... and folks recognize him as such ... and the movie about him is now nominated for a documentary Oscar.

Daniel Ellsberg - The Most Dangerous Man in America.

It's a Great Day for Conscience!

The film opened yesterday in Cambridge.

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

Co-winner of the Freedom of Expression Award from the National Board of Review, Winner of the Special Jury Award at IDFA, and an Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature, The Most Dangerous Man in America tells the story of Daniel Ellsberg, a high-level Pentagon official and Vietnam War strategist, who in 1971 concluded that the war is based on decades of lies, and leaks 7,000 pages of top secret documents to The New York Times—a daring act of conscience that leads directly to Watergate, President Nixon's resignation and the end of the Vietnam War. A riveting story of how this one man's profound change of heart created a landmark struggle involving America's newspapers, its president and Supreme Court. With Daniel Ellsberg, Patricia Ellsberg, Tony Russo, Howard Zinn, Hedrick Smith, John Dean and, from the secret White House tapes, Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger, who called Ellsberg "the most dangerous man in America." Narrated by Ellsberg.

Joe Gerson of AFSC posts this notice (I think Ellsberg was to talk today or tomorrow):

QuoteForum with Daniel Ellsberg Postponed to April 10
Friends,

As some of you may know, the film "The Most Dangerous Man in America" which features Daniel Ellsberg, has been nominated for an Academy Award.

This has necessitated Dan returning to Los Angeles following the film's debut here in Cambridge on Saturday the 13th.

We've worked out a rain check, and Dan will be returning to provide a critique of President Obama's foreign and military policies on April 10. We'll post time and place as soon as the arrangements are in place.

Sorry for any inconvenience that may have cause you, and we look forward to seeing you on the 10th.

For peace and justice,
Joseph

EXCELLENT example sir!

I heard Ellsberg interviewed by Bob Edwards on XMPR last week. He was there to promo the movie, obviously, but they had a good long discussion about the background. I'd like to see it.

Funny you mention it today because I was thinking about posting something like this over on Graftonforum.com :

"On June 10, 1975; Rockefeller panel reported on 300,000 illegal CIA files on Americans.
Remember how back then the US government would tell us that this is the kind of stuff that those "evil" governments do?
So how would the government fix such a massive problem? Probably by simply making "domestic spying" legal."

For those with Netflix, the movie is currently available for instant viewing.

It's excellent. I watched it a few weeks ago.

Wow, great documentary...
Another example of having grown up through the era and not knowing the real story. Gee... it couldn't have been I was lied to, could it?  :P

If you don't trust your government to tell you the truth, you must be some hippie commie pinko camped out on some hilltop in Vermont.

Oh... wait...

I find the worst pinkos are the ones living in Maine who dress up like Robin Hood
