Let me be the first to extend a "BAH, HUMBUG" to this stupid holiday as well. 

Although these days it's impossible to tell what the sentiment is exactly...

If Guy Fawkes had succeeded, and England had been turned into another Portugal, history would have worked out significantly worse.  So long, Magna Carta and English law...  Papal power would strengthen, possibly conquering the world.  Laws against usury, blasphemy, etc would be strengthened.  The Industrial Revolution might have never happened.  New Hampshire would be just another Bolivia.  We wouldn't have the same Internet freedoms, that's for sure!  But, on the bright side, at least the fertility rates would have remained high...
