Free Comic Book Day coming up
May 2, 2006 6:23 PM PDT
For those who haven't been to the local comic book shop in a while, this Saturday will be a good day to pull yourself away from the computer and drop in. It's the fifth annual Free Comic Book Day, and thousands of comic book stores around the world (including my personal favorite, Al's Comics, which just moved into brand new digs) will participate by giving away comics.

In addition to the free issues, lots of shops are hosting artist signings. Participants range from local, indie artists to bigger names like Steve Dillon, Bill Morrison, Brian K. Vaughan, Brian Azzarello and Jill Thompson.

See a list of this year's give-aways here, and check for your closest participating stores at the FCBD site.

This is interesting.

All for free, or like, one free issue for each customer?

I haven't read many comics in my time. I used to like reading Manga but I don't any more.

I don't know. I just know there are some comic book enthusiasts on the forum. Boy, we get a lot of different networks on here!

Most sotres will give you your choice of 1 or 2 of them, and if they have some left over at the end of the day they'll let you take more -- especially if you buy some.

My comic book store "Dragon's Den" isn't doing it this year. HE has to buy so many and he never gets rid of any of them. But the other store in town Rainbow is doing it this Saterday, so I'm going to drop over. They always stamp the free ones w/ their logos though. :( But that's kind of the point. It's advertising. The whole industry gets together, and each company publishes 1 or 2 comics for free -- typically it's a continuing story that you'll need to pic up the monthly next month to continue reading. The industry attracts a bigger market, and hopefully they continue purchasing comics -- at least the continuing stories of those that they read on free comic book day anyway.

In the free market when things are free -- it's usually a form of advertising. But  hey, it's still free :)

You should go check it out.

Interesting. I'll have to get in touch with one of my high school classmates, who owns two comic stores (Excalibur, in Texarkana and Shreveport).

I'm more a "Classic Comics" kind of guy, but I might pick up something interesting for the kiddos.

Who's "Liberty Girl", and is her #0 a good one to have?

I'm not familiar w/ liberty girl. I'm not even familiar w/ the publisher Heroic publishing.

Looks interesting though.
