Prosecutor facing drug charges quits

MANCHESTER ? Kenneth Bernard, a city prosecutor charged with three counts of possessing marijuana, has resigned, The Union Leader has learned.

Vicki Woods of the city's Human Resources Department confirmed yesterday that Bernard, 34, last known address of 120 Huse Road, is no longer employed by the city. She did not provide the date of his resignation.

Bernard turned himself in to police on Feb. 15, a day after detectives obtained a warrant for his arrest on the misdemeanor charges.

He is to be arraigned March 10 in Manchester District Court, where he prosecuted individuals on violations and misdemeanors, including possession of marijuana.

Bernard is charged with possessing marijuana on Nov. 30 at the 120 Huse Road home, and having it in his possession twice on Dec. 4, again at his home.

On Dec. 4, he was placed on paid administrative leave by the City Solicitor's Office pending the outcome of the investigation into allegations made by his wife, Donna. She raised the matter in November in the midst of divorce proceedings.

The Bernards' divorce was finalized earlier this month.

According to court records, police found Bernard's fingerprint on a bag containing marijuana at his home, and a urine sample he provided tested positive for marijuana.

City Solicitor Tom Clark said yesterday he had no comment on the resignation.

Attorney Emile J. Bussiere Jr., who represents Kenneth Bernard, also said he had no comment to make on the resignation.

Bernard is the brother of Christopher M. Bernard, who is accused of killing their sister, Trisha Doyle, 30, of Hooksett, and her two children, Gillian, 4, and James, 2.

The three were found stabbed to death in the home of Christopher M. Bernard, 35, of 61 Johnson St.

Christopher M. Bernard is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and remains detained in the Valley Street jail.
