Keep in mind, property taxes are the direct result of the town budget the residents of the town vote on.  It gets split between all the property owners based on valuations, if yours goes down, everyone else's goes up.  Reduce your taxes by getting the town to reduce its budget!

shift taxation off of buildings and onto the socially created land values (givings rather than takings) and then you won't be penalized for improving your house with your labor.
