Imagine this if you will...

You enlist to serve your country then two years after enlisting you are given a blue UN helmet and armband and told you must serve the UN protecting another country.

That is exactly what happened to Michael New.  When asked why he was told "The President says so, therefore it is."  The president at the time was Bill Clinton who signed presidential direction 25 which gave this order.

On the day he was told to report to duty wearing the blue arm band and helmet he arrived wearing his US Army uniform and was promptly removed from the field and read his rights.  The other 549 soldiers who did were then told they were being placed under the command of General Jehu Engstrom of Finland.

This case has now progressed to the point that it is currently being reviewed by the US Supreme Court.

Only if his principles are about Freedom and not just US nationalism.

Dear Friends,

I know Mike New's father.  Daniel New wrote the book about Mike's case.  Daniel and his family have spent most of the last dozen years organizing to raise funds to keep the case alive, as it continues to move through the courts.  I gather they have overcome their latest setback.

Daniel is a good man and a good friend.  He and I met in Milan, Italy at a conference "Against Leviathan" which objected to the European Union on free market grounds.  That was in December of 2000.  Both Dan and I spoke at the conference.  It was a wonderful event.  Wendy McElroy was there to speak on individual feminism with her significant other Brad.

All of us were overjoyed when the Plaza Duomo became the site of communist protestors objecting to our conference and our views.  Dan and his son Gabriel went into the plaza to take pictures and were interdicted by the carabinieri, as were Brad and myself.  So, at Wendy's suggestion, we climbed out onto the balcony outside her hotel room at the Grand Hotel Duomo and took our photos from there.  At one point, irked that we couldn't see their signs, I shouted, "Hey!  Communistas!" and gestured for them to raise their signs.  They did.  Ever since then, whenever Wendy and I see each other at a conference, we shout "Hey! Communistas!"  Much fun.

Dan and I have organized a few projects, some through the good offices of one of the world's leading experts on the Great Writ of habeas corpus, Dale Robertson.  Thus far, most of these projects have been in Texas.  Recently, Dan has expressed interest in some projects in Florida and in South America.

I am, of course, not saying much about Mike.  I have never met the man.  I do admire his views on national sovereignty and his concerns about a world government make sense to me.  I gather from his father that Mike's post discharge career has not been entirely brilliant, but that he's married, is raising a family, and continues to be sincere in his pursuit of justice over being discharged for refusing to obey an unconstitutional order.

Dan is very Christian, to the point that he does not feel comfortable in  most churches.  Dan is also a constitutionalist, and has been raising one of his granddaughters (whose mother left her in Dan's care) to have enthusiasm for constitutions.  So, I shipped them a case of Cato.org's constitution and declaration of independence pamphlets.  (I've been meaning to ship them a case of Ken Royce's Hologram of Liberty, as well.)

I would not say that Dan is any more libertarian than, say, Jesus.  And, since Dan is a follower of the teachings of St. Paul as well as of Jesus, he is certainly a bit less libertarian than Jesus.  However, he's also got a good sense of proportion.  He knows where the threat to our liberties comes from, and he certainly has no argument against, say, Genesis 1:29 or the commandments against theft and covetousness.  I believe he's a free marketeer.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

Regards,

Jim
