NH music scene

The threads about the music project and favorite songs made me realize that my tastes in music are eclectic, to say the least; so I'm wondering....

What is the music scene like in NH?

What styels are represented? Is it mainly rock/country/folk?

Are certain areas predisposed to certain styles of music?

Do the college towns have much more diversity?

Any observations from the musicians/music-lovers here would be especially appreciated.

Thanks.  8)

I'm in Manch and haven't really checked out the scene yet.  Everyone I talk to says most kids listen to rock or classic rock.  I have yet to find one good radio station.  I guess I'm more into Alt-rock (or what I call Suburban Rock).  I listen to lots of blues and some hip hop, with a decent number of classic rock and techno albums.

EJ, what are some groups you're into?  I have a  very healthy mp3 collection if you wanna trade some stuff...

EJinCT

Well, no short answer for what groups I'm into; so heres some background:

I grew up listening to 60's/70's rock and folk-rock music, ( everything from Hendrix, Rush, C.S.N.&Y)

In the early 80's I listened to alot of new wave/electro pop as well as rock ( ala Duran Duran, The Police, The Clash, Van Halen) This period is when I first was introduced to the reggae sound.

Mid 80's I gravitated towards Hip-Hop ( B.D.P/ P.E) and really heavy metal / thrash / progressive metal ( Metallica, Fates Warning). During this period is where I really started to become aware of reggae as it was influencing Hip-Hop.

Late 80's I listened to really heavy Death Metal/Grind-Core ( Obituary/SepulturaNapalm Death) and on the "commercially acceptable" side groups like R.H.C.P and Faith No More.

Early 90's I was listening to alot of alternative ( NIN, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam) more Hip-Hop, Electronica ( The Orb, Psychic Warriors of Gaia) and started expanding the styles of Reggae that I would listen to ( Dancehall & Dub).

Mid 90's I started getting into Jungle and Drum and Bass

Late 90's expanded the electronica selection more. (Trip-Hop, Acid Jazz.)

Since the late 90's the vast majority of music I listen to is  mostly Reggae, ( In all its forms) and Electronica; ( Everything from Ambient/Downbeat to Jungle/D&B and everything in between. I don't care for Techno or House.)

I will occassionally listen to some of the older styles that I listed above as well as some "World Music"; ( mostly African tribal and music of the Indian Subcontinent)

I'm really not too impressed by the vast majority of commercial "rock" music. these days. There are some exceptions though, I give credit to Evanescence, Linkin Park and Muse for originality and talent.

I can't tolerate the vast majority of modern (c)Rap. I do like a lot of the beats, it's just that quality lyrical content is sorely lacking IMO. I do like Mos Def, Common, Talib Kweli, etc...( aka Intelligent Hip-Hop) Though on the rough side I can listen to some W.T.C. and for more commercially acceptable Hip-Ho,p Wyclef Jean or Missy Elliot have their own thing going and aren't all about "Money and Ho's".

I very rarely even listen to standard radio anymore. Occassionally I'll tune into a college station or just listen to live streams on the net.

So as you can see, I'm all over the map as far as music listening habits

Whatchya got, whatchya want?

^^^ Nice! Thanks for that.  ;D

I know VT. has a decent "underground music" scene, so perhaps it's the same in NH.

Enjoy the show.  8)

I am in Manchester too. There is a lot of experimental types of rock and hard rock/metal bands here. I don't get out to the clubs. I do frequent a newer music store here in Manchester for drum gear purchases. It is located in one of the old mill buildings, which also has rehearsal rooms for bands in it. A lot of folks here are into a prog-metal band by the name of Dream Theater. At least they are mentioned a lot in want ads on the bulletin board.

depends on where you're going. manchester has a lot of metal and stuff like that. portsmouth/dover has a better mix of rock, alternative, americana, some hip hop, blues, and a lot of jazz. i know that there's a good bluegrass scene in the north country, and i know nothing about the keene area as far as music goes.

seeing one of my shows would be a great place to start  ;D http://www.myspace.com/jareddubravsky
