Does anyone know how to make a scanned picture an avatar?

I just got a scanner and thought it would be neat to put some pictures up from time to time but they're coming up too small for anyone to see.   The tiny one that's on there now is me and Rick from a few years ago and I have some of me and my twin sister as toddlers I wanted to make an avatar out of but have no idea how.

If you have software to edit the scanned photo, trim off the white space around the picture.

Thanks Kat!   :)  I will try that now.

I have Photo Image, should that be able to do it?  I keep trying to download the pictures but it says they're too big even though they are smaller than an avatar.  When I click on trim a box comes up saying I have to choose an item first and I did. :dontknow:

Darn it, I thought this scanner would be more fun than this!

Most scanners also have an option to scan just a certain area - so you could scan the photo only and not all the white space.

I couldn't find that option on this scanner. :BangHead:  I bought it at a tag sale so maybe it's an old one.  The biggest reason I bought it was to make my sister a shirt with iron transfer paper and put our baby pictures on it for her birthday, (I'm only 4 months late).  So yesterday I was messing around with it and thought it would be neat to make avatars out of some pictures but I'm ready to throw the stupid thing out of the window.  Ooops can't do that my turkey keeps visiting outside and I don't want to hit it in the head. ;D

This poor turkey, is it normal for him/her to be all by himself?  They just started building a house down in the woods next to us and I think they chased it out maybe and maybe something bad happened to his family.  He walks around like he's looking for something and I've said prayers for him and asked god if he needs my help to have him stop running from me, the turkey that is. :D

I don't know anything about your photo editing software, but I can show you how mine works.  There's a tool to select a certain part of the image, so you make the selection and then tell it to crop or trim it.

Oh, okay, so those dotted lines are on the area that you want to trim, right?  Do you know how many pixels are in an avatar?  I think I hit a button on Photo Image and saw those dotted lines but not around the picture they were above the picture.
I'm going there again, I must win this battle!
Thanks Kat!

I keep checking Rainey's posts thinking that I will see the full avatar... :)

I've tried for a couple days now I just don't know how.  I can always download the pictures but that's not really what I want to do. There all older pictures I have too because when Rick got his digital camera for Christmas a few years ago out went "regular" photos.  I haven't given up completely yet Dreepa so who knows maybe today will be the day! ;D

When I'm scanning pictures, I usually put the photo right on the edge of the scanner.  This helps me keep the picture straight since I catch the straight edge of the paper on the lip of the scanner.

The option your looking for (removing white space) is usually called "crop".  It's probably under the Image menu or on a toolbar.

Okay I've been putting the photos anywhere, usually in the middle.  I did try the crop but it took chunks out of the picture and made it a puzzle.  When I hit the crop button it became little dotted lines on the page of the picture.  Wow, did you make the picture of me and my sister better?  It looks bigger.  Thanks!  I'm waiting to see if Error comes on today to see what he can do if I send him the little avatar. :D
In the meantime I will try putting the picture at the edge, thanks again!
