I was delighted to discover that I no longer have to travel 10,000 miles to get a bottle of goooood Russian vodka:

It's not their top-shelf silver-filtered version, and the frosted bottle in the Tagil liquor store was their malted water version vs the ordinary-water clear bottle, which doesn't seem to be the case here, but hey, better than a $1,200 plane ticket.

:D

KBCraig

I'm not a vodka afficianado. To me, vodka is a mixer, and any mid level (i.e., better than Heaven Hill) will do for that.

But $16.50 is cheap compared to the single malts I'm trying, which run $40-60 per 750ml. My favorite so far is The Macallan 12yo, on sale for $38.

Get thee some Springbank KBCraig!  Or search for a specialty shop that imports Cadenheads.  They buy up barrels from many distilleries, sit on them, then bottle them at cask strength.  They have some pretty obscure brands, bought one that was from Alt-a-bhainne.  Had never heard of that distillery before then.

Bald Eagle

Ever try McClelland's?  I've realized an enormous savings compared to buying Lagavulin.

I'm new at Scotch, so I'm working my way through a few brands. I'll keep those in mind. So far, I've stuck with the Speysides. I may go all out next time and get an Islay, like Laphroig. Should be a big shock to the taste buds compared to a sherry-finished variety like Macallan.

Bald Eagle

Oh yes, Laphroig and Lagavulin are very very heavy on the smoky peat.  I pretty much stick with the Islay styles exclusively, though sometimes a Highland style will surprise me.

You might try the McClelland's at $15 to sample the style rather than go whole hog on something like the Big L's.  It's really a very acceptable close second to scotches that are 3 times the price.

I like Oban 14, very smooth.   Anyone going to the Highland Games this year?  They are back at Loon where they belong.  Its the weekend of Sept. 21st.   If you've never been its worth a day trip.   Games, music, food, crafts, books, lots of things to do.   Kind of like a Celtic Woodstock Weekend.  Me and some friends are all splitting a condo for the whole 3 days.
