Friday

I understand if you are in it for the money.  However, I wasn't looking for money, or large quantities of unpaid skilled labor, from others.  If I do it, I'll do it myself, my way, cuz it amuses me, and with no expectation of making money at it.  I have been trying to think of a way that I can offer my own combination of talents and skills to further the cause of liberty in New Hampshire in a positive way, and this is one idea I came up with.  Which idea I decide to go with will depend, in part, on how much interest (or lack thereof) there is in this idea.

Thanks for the links; I'll check them out.  8)

Sounds good! I'm actually glad that you brought this up because I had completely forgetten about all the work I did last year (and now that I found the code and looked through it I'm pissed that I let the project die...). I may just start the project backup even if I'm still the only one working on it. Maybe we'll have some friendly competition.

Some things we could do that other sites don't offer:

- Restrict the website to only SSL connections. This will significantly improve the privacy of the system.
- Make extensive use of PGP. Have a built-in mail client.

;D

Fragilityh14

we could maybe make it invite only and the email is just added and then the person can enter whatever information they want?

Because then someone could have as little information as just a forum name and avatar if necessary (esp if its someone people know by a forum name)

Um, you do what Myspace does and put ads on everything and get the dumbest of the dumb to sign up in droves.

You have better ideas for making money for an online service?

I think ads with the ability to subscribe for a fee to have the ads removed is pretty much the most optimal way to go.

Wait, if it's by Porcs and for Porcs intended for networking and extablishing/building our Porc community, why is the emphasis suddenly turning to making money off the list or site itself?  I think Friday's idea is better: to get a resource together where we can network more easily, and then we can choose to do business with each other and make money that way, but not from the actual listing.  You don't pay for a phone book, do you?  No, it's provided by the phone company in an effort to boost their business (i.e. your phone call making).

Friday wants to do it as a hobby and is volunteering her time. I think that's great!

I also like the idea of such a site but I cannot afford to do it without some compensation for my time.

I don't see anything wrong with some competition especially since we have such different goals. And if you dislike the idea of an individual profiting from their hard work then you can skip my site and only visit Fridays site.

*shrugs* okay!  I guess I was confused (damn blonde hair...) and thought the discussion was about working together as a group to make one resource available to all Porcs so we could build our community stronger... but by all means, competition is great!  gotta love the free market...

I thought so too, but:

Which is perfectly fine, I also prefer to work alone most of the time. It's much harder to argue with yourself  ;D But having worked on this last year I speak from experience when I say this isn't an easy system to build.

As such, I have started another thread for my specific project so as not to hijack Fridays thread any longer: Tuath Network

I like Ivy's post below... hire a liberty lover first.  I think that that will be much easier in a year or so when another 1000 people get here.

Rocketman when are you going to brew?
We should make a list of all the trades/skills/businesses that we need and tell those people to move to NH asap as clients are waiting.

I hear that a liberty bookstore may be moving to Concord soon.

Well geez... since you've charged ahead within hours of posting this, and weeks before my poll is scheduled to end, I guess we will.

One thing about 'ratings'... it may end up being a lovefest like ebay's.  Ebay is often tit for tat. If you give me a bad rating I will give you one... and then it kinda loses it's meaning.

I always found eBay ratings pretty reliable, myself.  But there you have the added advantage of volume, so even if a few ratings are bogus, overall you get a good feel for a person's history and reliability.

If ratings aren't anonymous, and are accompanied by a brief text message like they are on eBay, then I don't think cancelling out will be too big a deal.
