How do you make a living?

I am constantly amazed by the number of people on this forum who don't appear to go to work every day (some don't appear to go to work ANY day).  Many also seem to have no trouble routinely attending Congressional hearings, holding protests, or attending assorted events that take place at hours that anyone with a 9-5 job would not be able to attend.  Some also seem to have no trouble spending hours hanging out drinking in bars on a regular basis, which, while fun, isn't cheap.  I have set up this poll to assuage my burning curiosity.  Am I really the only one slaving over a hot cubicle every day??   What's everybody else's secret?   :coffee:

I stay up all night and sleep all day.

For the record, I cast my vote as "work 9-5" (not entirely accurate, but it's close enough for IT work)

No, it's not close enough for IT work, at least from my perspective.
How about "wage slave, work at least 40hr/week, but hours are flexible?"

I work 60 hours per week absolute minimum. OTOH, my hours are almost completely flexible.
That's how I manage to haunt the State House and the Forum.

I'm not adding a special category for that.  If you're salaried, which of course you are, you're 9-5, sweetcakes.   >:D

Oh, did Chris smack you upside the head yet for my Sev 1 TAR that took three WEEKS to resolve?   :P  The ringtone on my cellphone is the Austin Powers theme song.  I have now been woken up in the middle of the night so many times by that song, it's quite possible that I will pull a Drega and snap the next time I see a fluffy white cat, or an Englishman with bad teeth, or a bald criminal mastermind... or anyone wearing an Oracle T-shirt.  Consider yourself warned.  :angry4:

I'm work at least 40 hours a week, but not 9-5.

Flexible scheduling makes things easier to attend :)

Nope. I commute to an IT job in Massachusetts.

toowm

I work 9-7 with a (total) 2 hour commute when I'm in the office (~2 days/week). I try to work at home 1 day a week and am at clients the other 2.

I get 23 days off (vacation + personal) + 11 holidays + ? (I use about 2) sick days  a year. I didn't use all my vacation last year.

The line between work and personal time is very blurred. I have no problem reading, shopping or posting online while at work, but my Blackberry is on my hip all weekend. I think fewer and fewer salaried jobs are 9-5; you can get your work done almost anywhere. Used to be, salaried jobs were people management, so you had to be in the office. Now everything is based on completing projects.

Welcome to the 21st century! I think the demographics of the NH statehouse are going to be very different than last century, because many more people have flexible hours.

I get 10 days off a year, plus the standard allotment of holidays.  Yes, that 10 days includes both Vacation and Sick.

Looks like I'm not the only one with "salaried, flexible hours"
Can you add that as an option, sweetcakes?

I'm not in the tech support business, sweetcakes. I make wicked database features.
Seriously, though, I can check on a TAR number and see what I can do if you let me know the TAR number.
A special service, provided only for you.... sweetcakes.   :grouphug:

America has never gotten past that= idle hands are they devils workshop idea.

People brag about never taking a day off in 5 years and working sick.

Me, I like my 20 vac, 3 personal,10 holiday and 12 sick day time.

I don't see why you can't select "work 40 hrs/wk, but not 9-5".  I even added a plus sign after the 40 for you.  Geez, some people are so picky.  I don't REALLY work 9-5, but it's an expression, you know?  Not to mention a Dolly Parton song.  Also, saying "I work a mandatory minimum of 9:00Am - 5:30 PM, except when the Starbucks drive-through takes longer than usual, or my 27-year-old alarm clock decides to ring 20 minutes late for no apparent reason, or I just don't give enough of a fuck to show up on time, or I have the early shift, or the late shift, or work late" wouldn't fit in the little poll box.  ::)

Thanks for offering to help with the TAR, but I closed it yesterday.   :bdance2:

I agree.  It's demented.  I had to work hard to get over a compulsion to constantly be working, exercising or flagellating myself with holy palms.  I still tend to feel guilty when I'm underutilized at work, as if it's my fault I'm bored out of my skull.  And I have a really hard time calling in sick, even when I'm literally puking my guts out.
