What is the tipping etiquette when being served drinks at a table: tip after each drink? or tip after the bill?

The server I started with was not the server who finished serving. :/

Insurgent

I've heard some bartenders remark that if everyone tipped $1 per drink, they could retire early. Since most people order easy-to-make drinks this may not be far-fetched, eh?

And Keith is doing so well at it that I'm thinking about going twice a week!
I have gone twice this week!

I carry guns because some of the "customers" of the previous business at that location drive by on occasion and look in. Those, uh, "people" need a gentle reminder to be on their best behavior. And their parents certainly aren't doing it. :)

Maybe you shouldn't move here. 18-20% tips really aren't uncommon here.

Shouldn't move somewhere because common tipping practices are higher than where they currently live?  I don't think so.  NH is more expensive than most of America (well, Manchester to Nashua to Portsmouth is)...I think people will be able to get by.

That was the whole point. :) If an attorney can't afford an 18-20% tip...

Not to get this thread back on topic or anything...

Ridley said he wanted to do an open carry parade on elm street before the meeting.  Is anyone going to join him?

sandm000

Count me in, what time before the meeting?

Kat Kanning

I"m not going to be able to make it.  How about you set a time?   :)

sandm000

If dave wants us to parade with him, he might announce a time when he will be showing up, thereby making it easier for the rest of us to join up with him.

Or we could just show up at 10:30 walk up to the verizon building and back to murphy's two or three times.  Does anyone have a better location to walk to or around?

It's one thing to walk down the street. But I'm not so sure that just parading around the arena two or three times is such a hot idea.

Original Rebal

This is quite the interesting thread.

Let me attempt to be completely honest and fully integrated
and I'll try to be brief and to the point.

(For the record, I most often tip at least 20% but may give a
$20 for $17 tab if I have no singles... And once I forgot to tip
when my change was handed to me outside and she was gone
before I had a chance (I had intentions to find her but didn't...
and I've made it up to her since. Even after getting ignored my
next time in.)

The level of service should NOT be focused on the amount of
the tip. Make 'pleasing the customer' top priority and tips will
be more than average! ...Some people don't tip well and others
do, some people can't afford to tip will and still do.

When I worked behind the bar, I never thought about 'earning
tips' or 'how much one person tipped'. I loved my work and I
kicked a$$ at making sure people had a good time... And the
tips came... And they came back again and again.

(That's what I see in your new girl Ivy!)

All your girls look good and work hard, but I think they are
focused on the wrong objective if they are decreasing service
because of a low tipper... especially if it was from the time before!!!

That's my philosophy, now let me share some tips on how to
increase productivity thus increasing their tips:

1) Always bring change in the credit card/check envelope. That
way, a tip can be left inside vs. handing the $$$ from hand to
hand as it was in my case where I forgot... Which is even better
for the staff since they don't have to wait for a tip to be handed
to them. It wastes time too.

2) Integrate multiple tasks - I know it's tough to coordinate and
multitask many things but the more we do, the better we get.
The more physical movements that can be eliminated, the more
time and money that is saved and made.

(I stood at the door the other night for 7-8 minutes (not
exagerated) waiting for $6 in change on a $14 tab while I saw
food and drinks delivered and two bills delivered and picked up.
I'm not sure what the issue was or if she was wanting me to say
'keep it' but twice she said 'I'll get your change in a minute'.)

3) As important as 'combining tasks' is, so is 'dividing tasks'.
For example, if a table of 15 are filing in, instead of waiting and
taking everyone's order at once, get the early orders first and
get them in and then come back for the others... This helps
preparing and delivering the meals as well!

(Yes, you don't want to create a lot of additional tasks but
you also don't want to create future overwhelm by puting
off tasks.)

4) Being 'ontop of tasks'. I don't know how often it occurs at
Murphy's but at many places an order will often sit for minutes
waiting to be delivered. If it's waiting for another order then
fine but if it's 1 of 6 orders and two trips will be needed anyways,
then strategic timing can be used to make two efficient trips
instead of two rushed trips.

5) Thinking ahead. This is a skill that is learned and mastered
but benefits the staff, the owner and the customer. One example
is, how often does a customer need to ask for a beer vs. how
often the wait staff asks if they are ready (when he/she has
an extra minute) This will save time, frustration and overwhelm
in the near future and will result in great satisfaction for EVERYONE!

Ok, Keith, I think I've rambled on long enough.

I hope some of this helps streamline your service and helps make
your customers and your staff happier.

So much for being brief,

Hunter

p.s. I spent decades evolving my 'integrating skills' and there is
much more that I'd like to share. I'll keep an eye open and let
you know where/if I see that an evolution/upgrade can be made...
there's always hundreds.

p.p.s. No disrespect by any means was intended by this post!

I wasn't intending to imply we should Lay Siege to the Verizon, merely that we should walk from Murphy's to Verizon and Back Again to Murphy's to "Parade" while carrying openly.

Yeah, you don't want to assert your rights too much

Starting tomorrow, I will tip 1 oz. of silver for my family, if it's OK with the servers. It's certainly more than 20%.
