Grow Lights

Winter is coming, and I need to look into getting a grow light for my lemon tree! Does anyone know anything about them (because I sure don't!) and what kind of grow light would be ideal? I don't need anything big, just something small I can let shine on my tree for a few hours after the winter sun goes down so my lemon tree doesn't feel lonely :)

You call that thing a lemon tree? It isn't even a sapling yet! :)

Rochelle

Well it IS a lemon tree, but it's a miniature one, so it won't get very big and won't ever be planted outside, it's meant to be an indoor potted plant. But it will grow lemons; it's already blossomed twice which is good for such a young tree (I got it in April) :)

this is the first thing that came to mind.

Get a big cardboard box and line it with aluminum foil, shiny side facing in.  Stand the fluorescent fixture up on end and make an opening in the side of the cardboard box to fit the light fixture.  Grow light tubes can be bought from garden stores, or full-spectrum tubes can be purchased from tropical fish stores.

Put the little lemon tree in the box, make sure it's watered and there's a ventilation hole in the top of the box, and switch on the light.  The foil will reflect the light around the inside of the box so that the plant is bathed in light from all sides.  You could even set up the lights on a timer.

Cool! Think a place like Lowe's would have it or do I have to go to an actual garden supply store. And you get  Karma, Bald Eagle, for giving the one useful reply  ;)

Edit: Whoops, Beavis distracted me so I missed FreedominNH's reply

Thanks guys:) I'll have to pop around and see what I can find!

On Mythbusters they should that anyway of talking to a plant helps (nice or Pat yelling) but rock music is best.

Is that really what you've named your lemon tree, what the file is named?

Rochelle

Lol, no, it's just what it got saved under because the last pictures I had downloaded were from a Ron Paul lit drop. I need to go through my pictures and organize them at some point. The lemon tree's name is "lemony." I was going to name it Pekka to annoy my husband, but Lemony just stuck.

dalebert

Sure, Rochelle. You want grow lights for your lemon tree. Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink. Know what I mean?
;D

Yah, sure--deny that you named your lemon tree after Ron Paul  :)

Rochelle

Hah, maybe I will now. Or, I'll change its name after Ron Paul wins the presidency--that should be some motivation for him to make it happen! ;)
