A Massachusetts Port Authority staffer manning an information booth in the terminal became suspicious when Simpson—wearing the device—approached to ask about an incoming flight, Pare said. Simpson then walked outside, and the information booth attendant notified a nearby trooper.

The trooper, joined by others with submachine guns, confronted her at a traffic island in front of the terminal.

"She was immediately told to stop, to raise her hands and not to make any movement, so we could observe all her movements to see if she was trying to trip any type of device," Pare said. "Had she not followed the protocol, we might have used deadly force."

Boy, if I'd seen that shirt, I'd have been terrified.  ::)

I guess so far that those kids with the lights in their

I just heard this story on the radio (they are talking about it right now on 96.9).  They mentioned that quote from the police and I was shocked.  The way they put it on the radio was had she not comply they would "drop her".

The girl is wearing an MIT sweat shirt.... hello doesn't that hint that maybe electronic devices are her thing.

And what really kills me was the fact the one host and most of the listeners on the radio show were saying jail time was needed here to "send a message".  I do agree that a message needs to be sent but I don't agree that it needs to be sent to some nerd chick from MIT.  I think the message needs to be sent to the paranoid public who coward in fear of their own shadows.  Who freak out over light up cartoon characters, tremble over toy bazookas and completely lose their minds when someone actually uses their 2nd amendment right to carry a real armed gun.  Fact is that if someone wants to harm you either by blowing you up or shotting you, you are likely not going to stop them no matter how strict you get going after toy bazookas and nerdy chick.

pretty funny joke, but it was pretty stupid to risk trigger happy tsa agents mowing her down.

Fluff and Stuff

My son is attracted to the schools like MIT and Caltech that have a tradition of geek pranks - modifying a prominent dome, hacking scoreboards, etc.

You have to wonder if the next group to do this will be arrested as terrorists, especially when some of them were born in another country.

I don't think she was playing a joke. I think she was just wearing silly blinky lights on her Course VI shirt, and is being prosecuted for "failure to run around scared of boogeymen". Possibly with the aggravating factor of "not taking us seriously when we say you should run around scared of boogeymen".

An updated story has an expanded quote from the cop noted above:

He added, "She's lucky to be in a cell as opposed to the morgue."

Some of you legal guys might want to jump in here;

1)  Doesn't her wig constitute a disguise?
2)  Does her having a battery operated play doe make her a lesbian?
3)  What would battery powered Silly Putty do?
