Funny. Though I don't recall the second line you quote, I didn't know anyone but I remembered that song. I have NEVER heard anyone mention it.
Every time I hear "Join Together" I think of "Water" because it was the side B of that 45, and I though it was the better of the two songs. I don't think either of those songs ever made it onto one of their albums.
My memory is that it starts with Daltrey belting out (before the music starts), "The foreman over there hates the gang!" Then a little music, then, "The policemen they are acting so tough. They need water. Cool cool water ... '

The quote "I'm alive but I don't know how" is in the water song.
