I've come across 2 just-announced openings in political science and
sociology at different New Hampshire colleges. These are both 1-year
appointments, potentially renewable, so I won't be applying for them (it
would be insane to give up a tenure-track job for a temporary one, even in
NH
). But if you are, or know someone who is, liberty-friendly and is ABD
or a new PhD in either of these disciplines, please contact me!

Jason

We all have to decide our own priorities and I certainly won't fault you for that. You seem happy in your current position. However, I would have to disagree with your notion of what's insane.

I gave up a nearly six figure and extremely stable job with benefits and went on sabatical to decide what I want to do. Now I've been unemployed for a year and living very frugally while I've been putting deep thought into how I want to make my living. My comfy job was in the Socialist Republic of California for one thing where cost of living and taxes are outrageous. Now I'm looking into ways to make a living that are very risky, i.e. small business ventures, but the difference is I'll be working on my own terms and living in the FSP state with other activists. Living your life on your own terms is worth quite a lot of money, at least for me.

I like to call it the FSP: The Free Self Project.

I don't think I'm insane.  ;)

P.S. Thanx for putting out the job postings. Would they be at all interested in a psychology PhD for the socialogy position? Sorry, in my mind those seem closely related but I'm a layman. I know one who is liberty-minded.

I gave up a tenure-track job for no job.  In fairness, my job was probably a lot worse than Jason's, and in a more hellish place.

Regardless, my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.

Perhaps someone who does social or political behavior, as opposed to the more biologically oriented brain work. It's probably worth putting us in touch regardless, and I can send him the position description.

My view is that because of my discipline and research area, I can do far more for liberty inside academia than outside it. Fortunately, there are other opportunities in or near NH next year that may allow me to get there, on at least a temporary basis, without giving up my current job. Of course, nothing is guaranteed, but the chances are good.

I'm sorry, but saying "expose the cops as the thugs they really are" when you're running for office is just dumb. And more importantly, incorrect. Most cops aren't thugs. No wonder serious Free Staters want to disassociate themselves from the extremists.

Jason, as the founder of the Free State Project, you have my respect.  Thanks to you, us freedom seekers have one more welcome light at the end of the tunnel.

I do, however, take exception to your statement that "serious Free Staters want to disassociate themselves from the extremists".  Has it occurred to you that those of us who want to take the cause of freedom all the way are every bit as serious as those who are more restrained in their quest?

Just remember, your "extremist" allies comprise a large cross section of the FSP membership.  Does the fact that this forum is one of the most popular in NH, if not THE most popular -- far more so than the FSP forum -- tell you anything at all?

Again, thank you for giving us this unprecedented opportunity to unite for a common cause.

I don't get on Ian or Dave's case, so let's lay off of Jason.

There are a lot of people out there who are interested in changing our country's self-destructive course, and doing something to re-establish a culture of Liberty, smaller/no government and individual responsibility.  They are all going to have different ideas about how to go about doing this.  You can't shove freedom down the throats of New Hampshire natives, and you can't shove your perceived way of achieving Liberty in our Lifetime down the throats of other Freestaters.

As more and more people make the move, there will be more and more ideas and different viewpoints being put into practice.  Learn to deal with it.  If y'all spend your time bickering and infighting, you'll be dividing yourselves for the Statists to conquer, instead of spending your energy finding what actually works in the struggle to fix all of the wrongs in our rapidly degenerating government-controlled society.
Maybe we will discover that having activists outside of the state is an unanticipated and crucial factor for accomplishing the reversal of tyranny. I'm not Nostradamus.

Abbie Hoffman was a freakin' nut job, but there's fine line between insanity and genius.
For all of the wacky stuff that he did, he was nevertheless a very intelligent guy and had some good ideas and advice for people willing to listen.

Messages to the brothers (to be accepted or rejected)

Maintain a sense of humor.

The reason the U.S. Government will lose ... is because they overreact.  ....  When that happens they begin to devour themselves. .... ...we never eat our own.

We can only have a revolution based on trust.

Never explain what you are doing.  This wastes a good deal of time and rarely gets through.  Show them through your action, if they don't understand it, fuck 'em, maybe you'll hook them with the next action.

When you meet a brother, never preach to him.  ....  Always respect the style of a brother.  If he is doing your thing, you should not even waste time talking to him.  Never preach to the already committed.

Never forget that ours is a battle against a machine not against people.  If, however, people behave like machines, treat them as such.

Revolution for the Hell of it and Steal This Book have much such practical wisdom, I suggest getting copies.

A similar anonymous web "hit job" was done on the Second Vermont Republic that included hit pieces on Thomas DiLorenzo of the Mises and Jason.

Agreed.  Freedom seekers need to unite -- even with those who don't share all of the same views -- not "disassociate themselves" or imply that others are not serious.  That is exactly why I responded the way I did to Jason's ill-conceived characterization of his own allies.  Might I state again that I have the utmost respect for him, because of what he has actually accomplished for the freedom movement.

Abbie Hoffman...I need to find replacements for the ones I lost in a fiery roll-over 24 years ago.
Also gone is my copy of Do It! by Jerry Rubin.

Thanks for the reminder. Now where did I put those keys...

The only people who are "serious Free Staters" are those who have moved to NH and have been active in some way. Extremists in Jason's mind, of course. Fuck him.

Careful, your troll is showing.

I think you may have jumped to conclusions about whom I was referring to as "extremists." My confirmed view is that our objective as libertarians should be a society of free and responsible individuals, in part because a society of free and irresponsible individuals will not long remain free.

Actually, come to think of it, my job wasn't tenure-track.  I was up for promotion to Assistant Prof. my last year, but didn't apply.  I did not want to live in Kentucky anymore, period.

And I wasn't worth much to the freedom movement in academia.  So my situation was quite different from yours, Jason, and I didn't mean to imply otherwise.

When Jason Sorens moves to New Hampshire, there will be quite a party, regardless of when it happens.
