We Minnesotans were sweating bullets (pun intended) for the whole duration of our fleeing from Minnesota to New Hampshire! We travelled by night, avoiding the weigh stations and such  :)
I also am from Minn. moved to NC last year for change of pace and warm weather. Minn. and Wisc. are gun owners paradise compared to NY, NJ. almost everyone i ever knew had a couple guns. and i dont even hunt.
Like target shooting though.

The only way one's car will be searched is if they consent or are arrested (or some other reasons your car would be seized).

Or you take a tunnel or bridge where the NYC Police are allowed to search cars at random.

While there's no doubt that NY --especially NYC-- is a police state, the fear here is a little exaggerated. Everyone who has moved to NH, or driven to PorcFest, has passed through NY. Many were transporting guns at the time.

Even NY realizes that FOPA protects people legally transporting guns (NJ still needs some education, though). Unload them, lock them in the trunk, and you're good.

Do you remove your bumper magnets for that?  I probably would.

Um, the smell? :)

Heh. :D

One result of overpopulation. In addition to filth, don't forget to include the rate of crime and costs of living that are associated with that as additional reasons.  ;D NYC can be a cool place to visit, but I couldn't live there.

Honestly, with standard precautions I wouldn't be overly worried about passing through the state with firearms. Heck, I bet hundreds of thousands routinely carry illegally when living there.

If you get caught carrying in NYC, with out a permit, it is an automatic year
in jail. It's madatory even the judge has no choice about it.

Thats what Getz went to jail for in the infamous subway shooting.

Fair enough, but I know for a fact it doesnt stop people from carrying; I know several, that live in the city, personally.

In CT. one can receive a year sentence for a single cannabis seed; that doesn't seem too effective either  8)

pretty scary stuff. My friend is a super paranoid person and was discussing mailing them to himself. I imagine just having them unloaded in the trunk would be enough being as getting ones cars searched is pretty rare, but I never carry guns so it's not something I generally have to think about.

I'd be travelling East across the northern states.

If one is not a risk-taker or able to maintain composure around L.E.O's, then mailing would be a good solution.

Still, I don't feel there would be any great risk if they were properly stored in a trunk. Yes, its possible to get pulled over in NY for no legit reason, but the probability is low IME. I have been through NY/NYC more times than I can recall and I have never been pulled over.
