Here's two good ones for y'all to ponder:

invictus

out of the night that covers me,
black as the pit from pole to pole,
i thank whatever gods may be
for my unconquerable soul.
in the fell clutch of circumstance
i have not winced nor cried aloud;
under the bludgeonings of chance
my head is bloody, but unbowed.
beyond this place of wrath and tears
looms but the horror of the shade,
and yet the menace of the years
finds and shall find me unafraid.
it matters not how strait the gate,
how charged with punishments the scroll,
i am the master of my fate;
i am the captain of my soul.

How Did You Die
by
Edmund Vance Cooke

Did you tackle the trouble that came your way
    With a resolute heart and cheerful?
Or hide your face from the light of day
    With a craven soul and fearful?
Oh, a trouble's a ton, or a trouble's an ounce,
    Or trouble is what you make it.
And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts,
    But only how did you take it?

You are beaten to earth? Well, well, what's that?
    Come up with a smiling face.
It's nothing against you to fall down flat,
    But to lie there–that's the disgrace.
The harder you're thrown, why the harder you bounce;
    Be proud of your blackened eye.
It isn't the fact that your licked that counts;
    Its how did you fight and why?

And though you be done to death, what then?
    If you battled the best you could;
If you played your part in the world of men,
    Why the Critic will call it good.
Death comes with a crawl, or comes with a pounce,
    And whether he's slow or spry,
It isn't the fact that you're dead that counts,
    But only how did you die?

I can read and respond to a lot of this stuff when my business is out of immediate danger.

DAVE, TAKE THE DAMN VIDEO DOWN.

This bar, The Last Resort, Port Orange, Florida (below link shows T-shirts) did not lose its license and it has capitalized on a very negative situation!

That's good. But apparently the NH State Liquor Commission can revoke liquor licenses without having to show cause. So it's not like we could point to this as some sort of defense/appeal if they chose to do so.

If they revoke it, one could post on biker forums (sure is pretty this time of year..fall colors and all) and invite them to Murphy's to support the cause? ;D

All you hypocrites and liars in the temple seeking gain
All you senators and lawyers with your motives to explain
All you victims and you heroes your petitions to complain
All you murderers and martyrs on the fields where you lay slain
All on the just and unjust alike it doth rain
And the quality of mercy is not strained

Yes vengeance and revenge they're just two words for pain
And the quality of mercy is not strained"

If
by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on !";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

"The ultimate determinant in the struggle now going on for the world will not be bombs and rockets but a test of wills and ideas-a trial of spiritual resolve: the values we hold, the beliefs we cherish and the ideals to which we are dedicated."

But those dealing in the actual manufacture of minds are dealing in a
very explosive material. The material is not merely the clay of which
man is master, but the truths or semblances of truth which have a
certain mastery over man. The material is explosive because it must be
taken seriously. The men writing books really are throwing bombs.

Quote--G. K. Chesterton

A great man indeed!

One of the founders of modern day catholic distributism - radical right decentralist thought (similar to the southern agrarians who folded into the traditionalist wing of the modern conservative movement.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributism

excerpt:
Distributism, also known as distributionism and distributivism, is a third-way economic philosophy formulated by such Roman Catholic thinkers as G. K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc to apply the principles of social justice articulated by the Roman Catholic Church, especially in Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum Novarum and more expansively explained by Pope Pius XI's encyclical Quadragesimo Anno and Pope John Paul II's encyclical Centesimus Annus. According to distributism, the ownership of the means of production should be spread as widely as possible among the general populace, rather than being centralized under the control of a few state bureaucrats (some forms of socialism) or wealthy private individuals (capitalism). A summary of distributism is found in Chesterton's statement: "Too much capitalism does not mean too many capitalists, but too few capitalists."

Interesting... never heard of distributism.

Do you happen to know the particular strain of C.S. Lewis's politics?   From reading That Hideous Strength and his other works, there are choice attacks against earthly authority.

Catholicism is a religion built on hierarchy and authority.

C. S. Lewis was greatly influenced by Chesterton although he never became a catholic.
