I don't understand why they don't like "feeding" :-\

GT

My guess is they make a lot more on the ticket.

I can understand the rule against feeding.? The point is that they want those spaces to be used by people who will not be parked there all day, and they want a certain amount of turnover, like every 2 hours, so that more people will be able to use them.? If you let people feed the meters, there would be no line drawn that prohibits people from parking in a metered spot all day, and just coming out to their car often enough to feed the meter.

I nearly wrote that I would expect a private company to make a similar arrangement, though once I thought about it, I had to back off and think that, no, a private operator, like a private parking garage operator would almost assuredly not prevent you from parking in a space as long as you wanted to.? ?:P

Sometimes there is both a meter that you can continue feedeing and a sign saying TWO HOURS MAXIMUM, to allow turnover.  I'm not sure what they do to you if you just continue parking, feeding the meter.  They might not take note of the same vehicle occupying the same space  for more than 2 hours( modern cars all look alike to me!), but, They can see the VIOLATION flag just driving by.

In Concord the metered spaces have 2-3 officers who walk by. The unmetered, time-limit spaces have a right-hand drive vehicle with paint-spray wand to mark tires.

The real problem is parking socialism.

But their isn't much we can do about that untill roads become more of a free market endevor as well.

P.S. Is it really vandalism to chop down parking meters like Cool Hand Luke? Our txes pay for them. Aren't they, collectively ours?

This is how socialism creates moral hazards.

Yes it is vandalism....that is as much my meter as it is yours...and I like them...leave em alone

No it is not.  It is about letting others use the spaces.  You have to keep things moving in downtown areas.  If people are allowed to park there all day, no one would be able to shop as easily as they can now.  This idea is lame.  It has nothing to do with making a bunch of money off of tickets.  The ticket is to curb the fact that people are parked too long.  The best way to stop a certain behavior is to hit people where it hurts...the wallet...It serves its purpose and the money gets put back into the roads which are some of the best in the country!

And how is that not control?

Of course it is all about control. Why should anyone force anyone else to do all their shopping in a specific amount of time? What about tourists who might want to take their time enjoying stuff? Who is to say what is "too long"?

Why do you "have to keep things moving"? It might be a good thing, but just because something might be good doesn't give you the right to force it on others.

Talk about hitting people where it hurts, as much as possible I avoid situations where I need to pay governments for parking. I avoid downtowns like the plague because of their parking meters and artificial limitations of parking entrepeneurs.

Of course, it is control.

But, wait!? I have come up with a situation where I think a private owner *would* want the kind of turnover that time limits on spaces demand.? If shops owned the street in front of them, instead of for pay parking companies, I could see them wanting a 2 hour limit sort of regime.?

It is all a question of control.? What we are trying to clarify is who *should* have the control versus who actually does have it.

But what gives you more right to them then me? It belongs to both of us.

Actually, my statement was more of a joke then anything, but read then Lew ROckwell artical.

What is it $.25 an hour!  If you took the meters out of....let's say...Concord...There would be no spots on Main St for consumers.  The spots would all be taken by the employees of the stores.  Also, anyone who lives there would be leaving cars all day and night.  Plus you know people would be leaving broken down cars, stolen cars, etc.  It is a way to keep things clean, nice, and fair for ALL to use.  You people are so self-centered.  You want what is best for you and your family.  How about a sense of community and helping and caring about your neighbor.

LuvNHnotGOVT

I have done this numerous times.  I would head downtown to pick up my sandwich at lunch and throw a couple quarters here and there into the meters.  I got caught once by a parking enforcement officer and they told me to stop.  I agreed, walked down the street, and 'fed away' another buck in quarters!   ;)

Pat McCotter

Concord parking meter cost doubling to $0.50/hour on July 1. Where are downtown employees going to park now?! ???

LuvNHnotGOVT

I know... I saw the big flashing sign that they had down by Dunkin Donuts.  Outrageous!  IMO!!!  I guess they have to find a way to pay for the sears block dream.   ???
