They are setting up for everyone needing DHS OK to fly, period, in advance of your trip.    Not making me want to take any trips via air that's for sure.

Yes a big step for the goons to limit our right to free travel.

I wonder what they used to bribe the airlines into accepting this.
I don't see how they could spin this into being good for business; but I bet they will.

I was no longer amenable to air travel after 9-11, when the way we decided to prevent such things from happening again was to start goosing old ladies and treating every citizen like an international terrorist. Nevermind the fact the policies that were already in place to supposedly stop such things didn't work.

I'll board an airplane again when I have the peace of mind that no terrorist would be stupid enough to try and take a plane because half the passengers are LEGALLY armed.

RattyDog

Thank you very much, Mr. Chertoff, but I am not a fucking terrorist and don't need you to connect any dots for me.

I love this....it's really killing two birds with one stone, isn't it? 1. Continue the fear mongering by making people think we need this "protection" and 2. Get citizens more and more used to be treated like cattle.

A bunch of fucking frogs in a pot on the damn stove is what we are. I can hear them now..."well, they're trying to catch terrorists, I don't mind if my information is collected, I don't have anything to hide....do you?" <cue shifty eyed "are you a terrorist" look>

GEEZ!!!

Where is error when we need him?  This is ripe for coverage at homelandstupidity.us

The only flights I've taken recently were over a year ago, to and from Yekaterinburg, Russia.

less travelers=less money for airline companies.

This sucks :(
I fly a lot (well, more that at least a few people here ;)) in order to visit my husband and my family (sorry, 3 day drive back to Kansas? I don't think so).
I would really love to see them without getting anally probed every time :(.

Will those scientists PLEASE get on developing a teleporter??

I'll bet between the two of us we could take some idiot that thinks a box cutter is a real weapon.

My money is on the box cutter thing never really happened.

The new body scanning machines will soon be in use; looks like you may get your wish.

I'll take Greyhound before I fly, thanks.  ;)

John Gilmore, whose letters to the PoliTech list, blogs and court cases I've been following for years, took a number of steps in response to the mounting infringements upon his right of unmolested travel.

He researched the 'secret law' that the TSA ostensibly relied upon.  He discovered not a law, but a policy; further, he found out that like most 'policies,' it changed daily and was communicated orally rather than being set down in any verifiable format.  One of the little-known aspects of this policy was that one may submit to a more thorough (????) search rather than present govID.

With that knowledge in hand, he proceeded to randomly educate airport staff and selected TSA personnel at several airports during his attempts to travel by commercial aircraft.  Some said OK, some said No Way, Gimme yer Paypahs.

He filed suit against them (lol) and got many, many dusty answers.  Then he sought SupCt cert for the issue, and was again denied.

What is your strategy against this particular form of tyranny?

I've been following John Gilmore's story for years. Being a millionaire pads your options when you are turned away at the airport.  ;D  I respect his stand. Just as an aside Sarah I came across a story on Drudge where a man supposedly won $1.6M on a slot machine and was denied because it was called a computer error. There was an interesting sentence in the article I'd like to share with you:

QuoteLawyers told ABC News that gamblers like Hoffman may have little legal recourse against Native American casinos, which sometimes operate beyond the reach of U.S. courts.

Interesting, no?

My strategy is not all that Earth shattering. Question authority at every turn. Don't talk to "the man" when he talks to you. Ride your bike when you can.

I used to dream about taking off the plates in Illinois. To quote Mel Gibson's character from The Patriot: I'm a parent. I haven't got the luxury of principles.

Then he lost a couple of kids. It was a movie, yes, but I often wonder how my peaceful stance would change if my kids got govnapped or worse.

Check your message inbox Sarah.

In Illinois, I doubt anybody would notice if you took off your plates. I think every tenth car is driving around without metal plates.

When I was in IL (1977) the temporary registration was a sticker in one corner of the windshield.
