Here's a splitter that is entertaining, in a waiting-to-see-someone-maimed sort of way:

Yes, it's exactly what it looks like: a big-ass screw that bolts to your truck hub in place of a wheel. A tractor PTO version used to be available too.

I'm amazed they're still selling it. I first saw it demonstrated at the county fair in the late '70s, when I was in high school. Scared the hell out of me then, and still does.

Interesting... although get your glove caught and you lose a hand!

I would guess a good solar splitter is to put the right kinds of wood in ashed and wait for it to mostly split

Makes my sphincter shrink just looking at it.

My tablet doesn't handle this forum well so I often hit the first page of a thread. Check out how little william

Solar-electric log splitter: http://diesel-bike.com/Wood_Splitter/Electro-Split.htm

The Super Split that they based that on is pretty cool... just wish it wasn't so expensive. The fast cycle time would be great.

Yeah, flywheels are very useful devices.  Much of the horsepower rating on many types of equipment is not anything that's necessary for the actual operation, but just to prevent stalling when it's first loaded.  A much-smaller engine with a large flywheel can accomplish the same tasks, with less fuel consumption, because the flywheel takes up the first surge of load.

Yeah, we keep feeding him and he keeps growing.  ;D

One day I'm going to use the 10k plus images to show his growing up.  :)

DR is selling their own Super Split copy now, too.

Flywheels are great. Many of the old low-speed engines never made more than 1-3 HP, but they did work that would take a modern 18-20 horse engine. Like Joe said, most of that is wasted under no-load conditions.

KBCraig

I like this one. It's a pretty conventional hydraulic, except it takes advantage of the double action cylinder and splits both directions. No wasted strokes, and a fast cycle.

I know we're cluttering up William's thread. Maybe he'll invent a really awesome superduper SugarPants splitter.

Free libertarian

We can't all be as manly as YOU!  ;D

I hand split all our wood for several years... faster cycle time than using the machine. But the toll on my wrists and elbows was starting to add up.

Russell Kanning

I only like to do that for stuff way too big for the machine with three splitters at a time :-)

Many interesting sights on our mountain, some right out our back windows...
