Did you guys go to the same school or is that game a southern thing?

I guess they didn't play that in your homeland of Baja Canada.

"Tackle the Kid with the Ball Tag" is not nearly as elegant as saying "Smear the Queer". I remembering when playing with the girls became a little extra fun... I guess around William's age.

The best games had an element of danger involved... they tried to ban us playing "Greek Dodge" because we would really wallop the other kids with the ball. Now-a-days they want little Johnny and Susie dressed like the Michelin Man just to walk outside.  ;D

Man what would they say about our favorite "Smear the Queer"... Today it would be known as Felony Hate Crime.

What's funny is I recall being really good at that game when I was "the queer". I was unstoppable. I had everybody on me trying to bring me down and they couldn't.

;D
Nobody could bring Dale down! He's such a positive person... super!

Yes Jim we all knew each other before and are playing a mean trick on you.

Pat K

I am guessing  that this the same as Kill the guy with the ball.

Yes, but why won't they explain what it is?

Well - I would think -Kill the guy with the ball-Pretty much splains it.

I'm sensing a lot of uncertainty.

Alright, I can see where this going.  Just get on your bikes and ride away as fast as you can.

They didn't teach you the game because they were afraid of you. I mean who's gonna take on Paul Bunyan.

It's funny, but I don't think we really thought about it being "Kill the Homosexual". It was just what the game was called and it was fun to say.

When I was in junior high, they banned marbles, "because it's gambling."  So we came up with a more wholesome game called, "throw rocks at each other."  I think the content of that one is self-explanatory.  It was much better than "gambling" for little bits of glass, I'm sure...

Because "queer" didn't always mean that.  It just meant "different."  It generally had negative connotations, and was often used in reference to sexual "deviation," but that use was by no means exclusive - someone could "queer the deal" in a business transaction by revealing information that would make the buyer less interested, for example.  Getting into the '80's, it became more strongly an anti-gay epithet, but until gay rights supporters "took over" the word, it was still used for many purposes - after that happened, it became essentially a synonym for "not heterosexual."

throwing rocks is supported by the thugs

"throw the ball at the big kid and then attack him"
doesn't have the same ring to it
