I'd been getting all bent out of shape over the latest news of excessive taser use when it struck me (no pun intended): it's not so much about tasers as it is against excessive force used by those who have a badge and a bunch of buddies with badges.

Before the tasers, the god-complex thugs would just beat the tar out of you (and still do, at times). Now, because of some dirty laundry being aired over excessive force when it was limited to nightsticks and fists, apparently many police deparments now have a "you can taser them before you hit them" policy.

Doesn't really matter what tool they're using now nor what they'll use in the future.

I think the tasers, up the use of force, before they had to take a chance on
getting hurt in a physical scuffle, now they can stay back and 50,000
volt you.

Correct, and to a small extent (I still don't completely believe the taser-maker's hype) that could be a good thing. There are and have been violent criminals of the murderin', robbin' type who will continue to do and be so until they have been thoroughly and completely physically subdued. Since I don't believe in executing, say, thieves, out of hand, but also that such thieving behavior harms others and must be punished, there needs to be a solution between death and apathy (caging them at your and my expense not being a fantastic solution notwithstanding).

Since there still exist police with the mindset of peace officers, and since I believe fighting against technological advances to be futile in the long run, I believe that tasers, much like handguns, are of course not inherantly evil. It's merely the wielder of the tool who can choose to be evil.

Man, that made me cry...he held her down and then tased her while holding her down.

I am convinced that this stuff is very common, not by what I have seen, but by the fact that misconduct in general is vastly unreported.  The police will say all the time about some crime statistic or another that they figure most are simply not reported.
Also, when a police brutality situation comes up, they casually state that there is an investigation etc.  They are used to dealing with the misconduct, just maybe not the cameras.   :-\

Checking Google there sure are a lot of reports in the news about tasers being abused by cops. Including one story about an M-26 Taser discharging in a Florida cop's holster because it was raining.  8)

Instructables.com has instructions for making your own Taser for free. Be sure and check your state laws before building your own Taser.  ;)

Cool link, thanks! :)

Here's one for a possibly taser proof jacket.

A real Taser outputs a bit more than "300 to 360 volts."

You are right.  Tasers are no more harmful to anyong than a gun, or a pencil.  It is the bully who uses it to control or dominate that is the problem.  In the hands of a person who takes responsibility for his own mistakes, a taser, or gun can both be used for defence, or a pencil could be used to spell correctly.   ;)
