US Vs John Lennon available online http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=777046699234389996

I just finished watching it again, and it really is powerful. If for no other reason than what he did for John Sinclair, the man is my hero. John, you are missed my brother.

Jacobus

Nice list.  I think Edward Abbey might have more name recognition than some of the others, so you might consider him.

I think in one of Dave Ridley's articles in Keene Free Press, he mentioned Paul Revere as a Christian anarchist.  I saw the reference somewhere, anyway.  I googled it and could find no supporting evidence of this though.

I'd love to see one-page writeups on the anarchist credentials of the people on the list.

A small majority of anarchists call themselves socialists.  AnCaps have spent years trying to spell out how things would work under their style of anarchy, but the socialists already are very comfortable in how to 'order' society.
Despite the retoric from many social anarchists, most are fairly nonviolent.

Voluntary collectivism.

Andrew J. Galambos
Dr. Frank R. Wallace

...though these might fit better under the term "Free Marketeer".

Ok, Noam Chomsky was deleted for being tricksy and false.

At great personal pain, I removed Ammon Hennacy, Peter Maurin, and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. I guess if other people's favorite anarchists lack name recognition, then I can't justify adding my favorites if they don't have name recognition.

I added Edward Abbey, but he's still on the bubble for name recognition.

What about Drew Carey?  I know he's a libertarian.  I don't know if that means free market anarchist, or just freedom leaning minarchist, but that is some name recognition.  Also Penn of Penn and Teller.  Same boat as Carey.  Reason loves these guys.

Caleb

I am a *GIGANTIC* Drew Carey fan. I would love to add him to the list, if he's a true anarchist.

I've always kind of thought of Penn Jillette as a gigantic asshole, but maybe i'm wrong about that.

Chomsky is an anarchist of the libertarian socialist/anarcho-syndicalist variety. His problem is that he seems to think state socialism/welfare statism is on the path to libertarian socialism.

Pretty much, but here's an interesting (well, debatable) take on it.

He's a Stalin apologist.  I saw him speak at hopkins once.  I wan't impressed by his values.  Smart man, but not a good one, was my impression.  In fact his speech, drooled over by the communists in the affinity group I attended with, was key to me getting out of leftist movements.

I recognize Proudhon.  I believe he said:  "Gradualism In Theory Is Perpetuity In Practice"

Chomsky is good for reading if you want a good mind to break down US foreign policy for you.

I got disillusioned with him when I read one of his essays where he was critical of the anti-war movement during the Vietnam war. Basically, he said, to paraphrase him, "I was initially a member of the anti-war movement, but I had to distance myself from it when they started burning draft cards. I felt that the draft was a safeguard against military excess, because essentially a conscripted army is made up of real people whereas a professional army is more hardened. It was a very bad idea to avoid conscription during that time."

My thoughts were:  1) way to put pragmatism (or what you feel is best) ahead of morality.  2) You jackass! Did you go to war, or was it only other people who should have sacrificed themselves on the butcher's table?

Eli

Yeah. My impression of him was that he didn't see people, just theory.

Often true of state socialists.
